Medications for the Hospital

Step:
1

Now that the hospital has been accredited by NHIF, they are expected to maintain stock in their pharmacy. Bramuel has been provided with a list of medications, some of which they have, and some they need. The estimated cost to get these medications is $1500 USD. Accreditation can be taken away if these are not available.

For this task, we are looking for organizations who may be willing to make a donation, fundraising ideas, possible partnerships we could pursue...anything that would help them get the rest of the medications they need in stock and maintain a sustainable supply.

Hi Jennifer

There was quite a lot of info under the old medication task, but I think most of it was in the wiki. Guess we will have to wait on Nabuur getting it back.

Is the $1500 a one-off, what will be the monthly cost for drugs going forward, and how much of this ongoing cost will Arrow be able to meet?

I guess one option may be to change the application to ADMA, but that depends on what the hospital considers to be its most urgent need.

NHIF provided a list of medications they require. The total cost for the medications on the list is $1500 USD. Some of them are already in stock. I see this as an initial investment. After that, it will depend on shelf-life and use in terms of how much it will cost to replace medications month to month. Does that make sense? Some months may cost more than others-these meds are the bare minimum that must be stocked at all times.

Hi Jen/Mary
This is for start but i know after stocking the first time then the hospital will carry out month to month stock by it self since it will not expensive as it is now.
the said medication the hospital has some of them but it is good to add all stock to the pharmacy so that we can be able to carry month to month running by our self.

Thanks for the explanation.

Have the NHIF given a date by which all the drugs must be avaiable i.e. will they allow you a few months before they consider taking the accreditation away?

Hi Jennifer

As you will know, I have accumulated quite a long list of organisations that accept funding applications from registered organisations in developing countries, and have already posted a link under the funding task. As a reminder, its at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n

However, although there is the potential that some of them might offer funding to a hospital, I suspect that most of them will take a few months to decide whether they will accept an application because of all the checks they do.

So, some may be worth a try but its so dependent on how quickly the hospital has to have the medication in stock. If they need them within the next few weeks it may not be a practical solution, especially as there is no guarantee that applications would be successful.

Hi Mary-

I was hoping Bramuel could respond about when NHIF would be back to inspect the hospital again. I think it's reasonable to assume that they will allow some time between the accreditation and the start of accepting the insurance cards to get things in order, but that's just me guessing.

I did find that link somewhere else and started going through it again.

Hi Jen/Mary
As you know we have already with one official from NHIF who is overseing the hospital on daily bases and he will be giving the report on very end of the month his duty is to come to the hospital every day in the morning to pick the No of the admited patients for NIHF and to see where we have improved in the pharmacy.

but we will be continue trying as things get better.
Best wishes

Hi Jennifer and Bramuel

There is one organisation you could try for funding either for medication or small-scale equipment. You may have seen them already as they are on that list.

Matopeni School have recently put in a successful grant application to them, in their case to buy textbooks, and I think it only took a couple of months to go through. Bramuel, you could ask Stephen about this, find out more about the type of information they need to consider an application. No guarantees, but may be worth a try and has the advantage that the application process appears to be relatively straightforward.

How to Apply

No official format, applications via email.

"These are our priorities:
Primary education;
Health, sanitation and clean drinking water;
Child and mother care, including street children, orphanages and maternity services;
Poverty alleviation, especially revenue generating projects.

To ensure that the benefit of available funds is spread as widely as possible, KTCT grants rarely exceed £5,000 per project or organisation"

which include hospitals/healthcare

Bramuel, I hope the inspector will see that you are doing your best and give you a few months to get things sorted out.

I cannot see details of the application process as this requires registration.

I have added it to the wiki

Bramuel-

Can you give us an update on where things stand with getting the pharmacy stocked to NHIF standards? Did you receive the reimbursement yet from them for October to purchase medications? How far are we still from having the pharmacy full stocked according to their standards?

Jennifer

I received a message from Bramuel today with an update:

"I checked out with the pharmacy and i have seen we have achieved more than a half of the NHIF stock standard. am so greatful on this.today i was with the NHIF official and he was so greatful too."

That's fantastic news! Hopefully with one more month of accepting NHIF cards, you'll receive enough reimbursement funds to purchase the remaining medications too.

Congratulations!

Thanks to the reimbursement of funds from NHIF in November, the hospital was able to secure the remaining medications for the hospital pharmacy. It is now completely stocked according to NHIF standards.

I am closing this task today as completed.
