Frustrated with the slow fundraising attempts for the Koliyonkulam evening school, Local Representative T.Jegan decided to run the Mumbai Marathon 2009 in order to garner pledges for the village. Find out more about the cause!

Tourism has brought economic benefits to Madurai, yet poverty persists. Many children stay out of school to work, often in hazardous conditions. To encourage the children, the village established the People's Association of Rural Development (PARD) to build a Life Skills Training Centre. The centre offers primary schooling for the younger children and skills training for the older youth.

In Vadgam many young men and women lack basic education or skills training. School drop-out rates are high and many children lack direction or hope for their futures.

In Kalna, only affluent families can afford to send their children to English medium schools. Poor families instead send their children to work, often in exploitative industries. Lacking English language education, these youth are unprepared for jobs created by globalization.
