• Analyse which crops are suitable (regarding to nutritional values, soil, water, climate, resistance against illnesses, costs, yields etc.)

• Research the Nabuur forum, (e.g., Khaparapada), for discussions about organic farming, no digging, no tilling, no outside inputs, permanent beds, drip irrigation etc.

Analysis of School Nutritional Program

The first step of our CBSM Nutrition and School Garden Project is to analyse the current CBSM nutritional program offered to the children of the school and establish what,

• Improvements needed to the quality of food
• Deficits exist in nutritional program
• Improvements to the quantity of food per child per day could be achieved
• Methods would be more efficient and be procured at lower costs

Organising and Supervising the Kimilili Clean Water Project

The work in Kimilili Clean Water Project is as follows:

  1. Identifying locations of a new water sources, either spring or well (they must serve more than ten families)
  2. If spring water, reconstruct or reroute water to enable sufficient drainage of water
  3. Build reservoir
  4. If well water, drill down to the water source
  5. Install a water pumping engine
  6. Install pipes so the water can flow freely

Farmers find a new source of income from avocados

Kabondo is suitable to farming avocados, so the community is looking into growing avocados as an income-generating project. The fruit would be sold for food and processed into value-added products, such as oil for beauty products or food preparation.
A biologist, a food engineer and a few other creative thinking Neighbours from Australia, UK and the US researched avocado farming techniques, options for cold-processing the fruit and organizations that purchase avocado products.
